New: Chavez threatens to halt US oil exports, again

CARACAS, Venezuela — Once again, President Hugo Chavez is up in arms over the possibility of a U.S.-backed invasion from Colombia and has threatened to halt oil shipments to the United States. On Sunday, Chavez said that he’d postponed a trip to Cuba because the likelihood of an invasion is the highest it’s been “in 100 years.”

“The Yankee Empire is threatening us,” Chavez told a crowd of red-clad supporters in a televised speech. “If there is an armed aggression against Venezuela, we will suspend oil shipments to the United States, even if we have to eat rocks.”

The U.S. State Department denied the allegations. But Chavez’s ministers quickly went into overdrive in an effort to back his claims.

LACPEC 2010

On behalf of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Program Committee, it is with great pleasure that we invite you and your organization to join us at the 2010 SPE Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference (LACPEC), to be held 1–3 December in Lima, Peru.

The theme of our 3-day multidisciplinary technical program is “Latin America’s Energy Challenge: Sustainable and Responsible Economic Development.” LACPEC focuses on the traditional needs of maximizing recovery and productivity and enabling the economies and societies of these regions to fully benefit from their hydrocarbon resources.

Specialized technical sessions will cover aspects of recovery, productivity, societal benefit, and research and analysis, as well as a number of overarching industry issues and integrated project management themes. The paper proposals are peer-selected by a program committee of professionals from leading corporations and research organizations from all over the region.

LACPEC features more than 120 technical paper presentations, posters, and panel sessions on topics such as deepwater developments, unconventional gas technologies, LNG, heavy oil, mature fields, safe and environmentally-friendly operations, and water management.

In addition to the technical sessions, the conference will also include a young professionals workshop and student paper contest.

This conference will offer your personnel the chance to learn and share knowledge and to discuss the challenges influencing and shaping our region.

LACPEC is an ideal venue to showcase your company’s latest technological accomplishments, products, and services. Through exposure to regional oil and gas providers, regional energy officials, and international executives, you can sharpen your business strategy and leverage your goals. This year’s conference promises to be a remarkable and beneficial 3 days for all who attend.

We look forward to seeing you this December in Lima, Peru.

CANACOL ENERGY LTD TO COMMENCE TRADING ON THE COLOMBIAN STOCK EXCHANGE ON THURSDAY JULY 22

Canacol Energy Ltd. ("Canacol" or the "Corporation") (TSX VENTURE:CNE) is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia ("BVC") to be listed on the Colombian Stock Exchange commencing July 22, 2010. The Corporation will be listed under the symbol CNEC at an initial price in Colombian pesos equal to that of the Corporation's share price in Canadian dollars on the TSXV upon close on July 21, 2010. This dual listing enables the Corporation to expand its institutional and retail shareholder base into Colombia where it has the majority of its operations and where capital markets are rapidly growing.

Charle Gamba, President and CEO of the Corporation, comments "The listing in Bogota gives institutional and retail Colombian investors the ability to purchase shares of Canacol through the facilities of the BVC, allowing them to participate directly in the growth of the Corporation. The listing will enhance Canacol's presence in Colombia, become an important source of liquidity for the shares of the Corporation, and Colombia could become a future source of capital for the continued expansion of activities both inside and outside of the country."

New: Ecopetrol to Invest $80 Billion to Double Productio

Ecopetrol SA, Colombia's state-run oil company, plans to invest $80 billion through 2020 to more than double daily output to 1.3 million barrels of crude.

Colombia's largest company reiterated that it plans to produce 1 million barrels of oil daily in 2015, the Bogota-based company said today in an e-mailed statement.

Ecopetrol is expanding its search for oil in Colombia, Brazil, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Peru to meet its production goals. Last month, the company won rights to explore domestic blocks in a government auction.

Colombia aims to use its armed forces to help scout for new reserves of oil, the commander of the armed forces said in an interview July 12. South America's third-largest oil producer after Venezuela and Brazil is training a military unit to help perform seismic testing to locate potential reserves, General Freddy Padilla said.

New: Explosion closes China oil port

China has closed the Dalian Xingang oil port in its northeast, home to the country's largest oil reserve bases, after crude pipeline explosions spilt oil into the sea.

State oil major PetroChina, which operates two major refineries in Dalian, has set up a contingency plan to cope with one week's closure of the main oil port that receives foreign crude vessels regularly and also a main export point for gasoline and diesel.

New: BP stops flow of oil into Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Oil is no longer spewing into the Gulf of Mexico -- at least temporarily -- as BP (BP.LO)Plc said it choked off the flow from its undersea well that ruptured in April and caused the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.
BP said it stopped the leak on Thursday with the tight-sealing containment cap installed three days earlier atop its blown-out well, and awaited on Friday the results of tests on whether the well remains intact.

Reservoir simulation

Reservoir simulation models are used by oil and gas companies in the development of new fields. Also, models are used in developed fields where production forecasts are needed to help make investment decisions. As building and maintaining a robust, reliable model of a field is often time-consuming and expensive, models are typically only constructed where large investment decisions are at stake. Improvements in simulation software have lowered the time to develop a model. Also, models can be run on personal computers rather than more expensive workstations.

For new fields, models may help development by identifying the number of wells required, the optimal completion of wells, the present and future needs for artificial lift, and the expected production of oil, water and gas.

NEW: Topology Optimization Enhances Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgeons got a helping hand from engineers and researchers at the University of Illinois and the Ohio State University Medical Center. The team designed a face reconstruction model by using a technique called topology optimization.
This new method, used generally by engineers in high buildings' construction, is based on a 3D computer model, that takes everything into consideration. It integrates several concepts from medicine, biology, mechanics, computations and numerical methods. “It tells you where to put material and where to create holes. Essentially, the technique allows engineers to find the best solution that satisfies design requirements and constraints

NEW: Approach Developed to Improve Drug Delivery in Tumors

By using mathematical modeling to understand blood flow, researchers - including the UA's Timothy Secomb, a pioneer in the field - propose a novel approach to treating cancerous tumors.

Researchers know that blood vessels are poor at transporting oxygen and cancer-fighting drugs in tumors. Using mathematical modeling, scientists have found a new approach that may improve drug delivery in the tumor and increase its effectiveness.
